🌿 About Amy
Hi, I’m Amy - fabric lover, problem solver (kinda 😁), and the maker behind The Plaid Cow.
I’ve been sewing for over 25 years (how is that even possible?), and I’m now in my 5th year of running this little handmade business. What started as a love of beautiful fabric has grown into designing bright, functional bags and gifts for folks who want practical pieces without sacrificing personality.
I’m drawn to bold prints, thoughtful construction, and the magic of a perfectly placed pocket. From crossbody hipster bags to hidden-pocket infinity scarves. Each piece is built for real life - coffee runs, market days, travel adventures, school pick-ups, and everything in between.
I believe useful doesn’t have to be boring. Everyday items should work hard for you… and still make you smile when you open them.
Everything is thoughtfully designed and handmade in Canada, one careful stitch at a time.
My love of quilting is really where all of this began.
In the early days, when my kids were small, I would cut quilt blocks while the kids were napping! I would piece quilt blocks together after they’d gone to bed, and stay up late finishing quilts for family members.
Hand-quilting happened in the winter while we were watching tv in the evenings. There was something deeply satisfying about adding the final binding, that last careful stitch meant it was complete. A beautiful, slightly imperfect thing made with love and patience, ready to be wrapped around someone I cared about.
Choosing fabrics, blending colours & patterns has always been my favourite part. The way colours and prints can tell a story. The way texture and structure work together. The fun of discovering how amazing certain patterns & colours look together has never left.
Years of quilting shaped the way I design today. Quilting taught me precision, durability, and the importance of thoughtful construction. It taught me that details matter - and that quality shows over time.
That foundation carries into every piece I create at The Plaid Cow. I carefully select quality fabrics for structure and strength, beautiful cotton prints for personality, and yes - even the occasional vintage find when something special crosses my path. Fabric choice matters to me. It’s not just about how something looks, but how it feels, wears, and lasts.
The same care, craftsmanship, and quiet pride I felt finishing those early quilts now lives inside every bag and gift I make - thoughtfully designed, carefully constructed, and made to be used and loved every day.
